Modern-day visitors with a decidedly different agenda have a plethora of choices at their disposal in the region. After all, contrary to what many people believe, the Algarve is not one homogeneous string of beach resorts and English pubs. When you consider that the Algarve comprises a whopping 5,400 km2 however, that opens up the game a little. Portimão isn’t where the club heads stay but that’s just as well. The second-biggest city in the region, with 50,000 people, is renowned for its sailing culture, excellent water conditions, golf courses and sporting events. Portimão’s Praia da Rocha may not be a glittering expanse of white sand but it does the job for summer fun under the sun.
