Famous as the "birthplace of Portugal", Guimaraes is a city of 160,000 people in the district of Braga. Though a major cog of industry in the country, the center of Guimaraes has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001. With exquisite architecture that spans a period of seven hundred years, the historic quarter is a bona fide marvel. The city of Braga is no less spectacular, with just over 175,000 people and dozens of extraordinary landmarks. These include the Bom Jesus do Monte Sanctuary, Braga Cathedral and Braga Castle.
