To understand and make sense of the morass that is the National Capital Region, one has to approach Metro Manila city by city (there are sixteen in total). There is Manila proper for one, home to the famous Intramuros heritage district and landmarks like the Rizal Monument, Fort Santiago, Cultural Center of the Philippines and Malacañan Palace. The City of Makati is the financial heart of the Philippines and a bastion of skyscrapers, shiny malls and gated wealth. Quezon City alone contains over 2.7 million people and the flagship SM mall in the country - the colossal, 460,000 m2 SM City North EDSA. Las Piñas City is another in a long line of Metro Manila hubs. South of Manila proper and Makati, Las Piñas is home to approximately half a million people and serves as a de facto satellite suburb and bedroom community for the metropolis at large.
