The city is dotted with historic trinkets, including the Iron Dinosaurs, a series of vintage steam locomotives from the early days of the sugar industry. BACOLOD CITY EVENTS
In January, the Chinese community celebrates the spring rejuvenation festival of Bacolaodiat with both fervour and nauseatingly bright colours.
A festival celebrating a love of festivities? There’s nothing not to love about April’s Panaad sa Negros.
Commemorating St Helena’s finding the ‘True Cross’, the religious procession of Santacruzan is celebrated nationwide.
Local neighbourhoods battle it out in October at the Masskara Festival, each vying to be crowned the best-costumed district.
December’s Christmas Tree Contest is equally competitive, with 61 districts putting their decorating skills to work.
WHEN TO GO
· Being sheltered from the monsoon winds means that the wet season in the Negros is not as excruciating as in other parts of the Philippines.
· January and February are the most pleasant months, as temperatures are warm and the humidity is bearable.
· Bacolod City is buzzing during Easter, but it’s hard to find a hotel that isn’t full.
GETTING AROUND
· Walking is the best way to explore Bacolod City, as there are many hidden treasures to be uncovered. Just keep in mind that jaywalking is illegal.
· Jeepney travel is by far the quickest and cheapest mode of transport, particularly as most attractions are quite far apart.
· Rental cars are a good way to explore the city and the countryside. The roads are well-designed and traffic jams are minimal.
