Pelham House
4 out of 5

Based on others' reviews, I think your experience at Pelham House depends on the room you end up in. We reserved a standard double for a 1-night stay during our trip to Brighton, but I think we were upgraded to a superior room due to the hotel being pretty empty that night. However we ended up there, Room 9 was lovely and overlooked the garden from the center of the 2nd floor of the main house. (It's the room with the case display of boats in the pictures.) I felt like we were Lord and Lady of the manor! The room was clean, warm (a bit too warm for us, but luckily the windows can be opened, which was very nice), and included an armoire for stowing our things. I had everything I needed - an iron, hairdryer (but it was of the wimpy travel variety - ladies, if your hair requires mega-wattage, be sure to bring your own), and iPod dock, which was a great touch. Although the King-sized bed was a bit hard, I still had an excellent night's sleep. Maybe it was the Prosecco (served in a chilled champagne glass - another nice touch) I had as a nightcap in the cozy bar? The bathroom was clean with excellent water temperature and pressure and the toiletries were sufficient and cutely presented, though I prefer to use my own. The room had only one set of towels, but we simply requested another set and it was brought by a staff member who also offered turndown service. Every staff member we encountered was friendly and professional. I was especially impressed with the two servers at breakfast, who were both friendly, efficient, and excellent, as was the breakfast itself. We were seated at a lovely table for two in front of the garden window and had a cozy, leisurely meal looking out on the freaky stormy weather that happened to blow across the country over the two days of our stay. Don't pass up the yogurt (which seemed to be house-made) and fruit compote, which was delicious. My fiance had the full English, which he thoroughly enjoyed, and I had the classic smoked salmon and eggs served on a yummy slice of toasted brown bread. We drove down from the West Midlands and had no problem parking in the hotel's lot, despite its small size, and weren't even charged for it (again, probably attributable to being one of only a few guests that night, but still appreciated!) I wish we could have stayed more than one night and am sorry that we missed dinner. Judging by breakfast, I'm sure the food would have been outstanding. My two main criteria for hotels are cleanliness and ambience. Pelham House certainly met both of those with ease. We had a warm, cozy, romantic little stay and I'd love to return someday if we ever have the chance.
