Favourite Cities and Hotels in Panama

The historic capital of the Republic of Panama is famous the world over for a canal and industrial heritage that marks it as singular in Central America. The fact of the matter however is that Panama City is a cosmopolitan metropolis with remarkable tourist appeal. The city of one million people is a former Capital of Culture in the Americas, with a archaeological ensemble and historic district. The Casco Viejo, home to landmarks that date back to the late 17th century, is where most visitors begin in Panama City. Primary points of interest include the Catedral Metropolitana, Salón Bolivar and Iglesia San Felipe Neri.

The downtown skyline of the capital hints at new affluence however, evident in restaurants, clubs and upmarket shops all over the city. While fun to explore, Panama is awash in natural beauty and as a result, trips to Bocas del Toro, Boquete, La Amistad International Park and the Pearl Islands are a must.

    Peaceful Panama City

With the demise of strongman President Noriega, Panama, home to the famous Panama Canal, has become far more stable and its capital, Panama City, has developed into a bustling (and safe) metropolis. The turquoise waters of Comarca Kuna Yala beach, the Gamboa rainforest and the tropical mountain paradise of Amistad International Park are all things that can be enjoyed in Panama City without the pressure of having to buy cheap and nasty souvenirs, and even in the colonial town of Casco Viejo local hawkers peddle their wares in a notably relaxed manner. ... From 16th and 17th century pirates to 20th century military dictators, Panama’s turbulent past now seems to be behind it. It still pays to keep an eye on your valuables in Panama City, but that’s true anywhere. So relax and take in the culture of one the world’s newest tourist destinations.

    Panama’s Top 10

    10. Amador Causeway The family that bikes together, stays together – although you don’t have to choose one of the daunting four-person cycles for your own tour.

    5. Museo del Canal Interoceanico de Panama Arguably the best museum in Panama, it traces the canal-building projects from pre-Colombian, Spanish, French and American exhibits.

    9. Historic Casco Viejo Walking Tour Starts at Plaza Independencia and finishes at Iglesia de San Jose. It takes a gentle one to two hours.

    4. Darien Province Once home to guerrillas and drug traffickers, this massive national park features a spectacular rainforest at its heart.

    8. Punta Culebra Marine Exhibition Center Provides a kid-friendly exhibition, plus fabulous views of ships entering the canal that over-12s can also enjoy.

    3. Parque Nacional Marino Rest with the sea turtles on the palm-fringed beaches of Isla Bastimentos, a 40-minute boat ride from Bacas del Toro.

    7. Museo Antropologico Reina Torres of Arauz Features 15,000 pre-Colombian pieces, plus some equally impressive 2,500-year-old artefacts from the Barrilos tribe.

    2. Volcan Barn Nacional Park The hot springs are bubbling, but relax – the volcano is definitely dormant.

    6. Museo Afroantillano The Afro-Antillian museum pays respect to the 30,000 West Indians who built the canal in appalling conditions.

    1. Archipelago de Las Perlas Pearl Islands – and simply precious.

December’s Annual Panama City Marathon has been running (boom-tish!) since the 1970s, taking avid joggers on a tour around the Gulf of Panama Coastline.
