Flåm General Information
As a portal to Norway’s gargantuan and peerless Sognefjord, Flåm is a magnetic destination. Together with the town of Aurland, some 10 km away, Flåm is a wildly popular and indeed, necessary stop in gorgeous Sogn of Fjordane county. ... Read more »
This corner of Norway is famously laden of course, with UNESCO World Heritage Sites like Geirangerfjord and Nærøyfjord and the incomparable Urnes Stave Church, a traditional Scandinavian wooden construct from the 11th century. While Flåm offers access to all of Sogn of Fjordane’s charms, as a major cruise ship port, the tiny village is primarily a base to explore the Aurlandsfjord and in turn, enormous Sognefjord. Flåm receives upward of half a million visitors per year, most by way of ocean liners like the RMS Queen Mary 2. The village is less than five hours from Oslo however and as a result, many do drive from the busy capital city. Perhaps the most memorable route into Flåm however, is by train. The spectacular Flåm Line is a branch of the Bergen Line and while only 20 km long, the ride in from Myrdal station, via the city of Bergen or Oslo, cuts through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. This is all a precursor of course, of the extraordinary landscapes to come in Sogn of Fjordane county. While in Flåm, visitors should make a point to visit the Flåm Railway Museum and Flåm Panorama, which presents a film on life among the fjords.
