Kawarau Falls

The picturesque district of Kawarau Falls is part of the glorious Queenstown area on New Zealand's South Island. Just a few kilometres separate it from the energy of the downtown region, which has evolved into a truly sophisticated and cosmopolitan town. Here you will find wonderful opportunities for retail therapy and terrific cuisine against a breathtaking backdrop of sprawling mountains and attractive bays; not forgetting the excellent reputation the region has for vineyards. Possibly its greatest claim to fame is the abundance of adventure activities that draw visitors again and again to challenge themselves against this magnificent terrain. ... Read more »

Kawarau Falls Top 3

  • Try your hand at a bit of white water rafting or jet boarding on the Kawarau River, famed for its role in the blockbuster movie, “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”.
  • Get away from the hustle of Queenstown and Kawarau Falls and take in one of the fantastic walks, especially tracking through the Ben Lomond Scenic Reserve.
  • Pluck up the courage to step aboard the steepest lift in the Southern Hemisphere on the Skyline Gondola, for a truly exhilarating experience and staggering views over Queenstown, Kawarau Falls, and Lake Wakatipu.

Getting There

Much of Kawarau Falls centres around the lengthy Kingston Road area; its main link to Queenstown and southern states is the imposing Kawarau Falls Bridge. The local bus service, known as Connectabus, is an excellent facility, with regular routes picking up at the International airport every 20 minutes, which is just ten kilometres away. Cycling is very much encouraged and is a great way to get around the town, with many tour operators providing a hire service to enable exploration of the trails that are so popular in this magnificent setting.
