Ohakune General Information

Above and beyond a reputation as the carrot capital of New Zealand, the small town of Ohakune is a gateway to some of the North Island’s most exquisite natural gems. Nearby Whakapapa Ski Area and Turoa Ski Area make brilliant use of the active Mount Ruapehu stratovolcano to provide incomparable recreation for droves of powder-hungry fanatics from Auckland to Wellington. With the village of Ohakune as a popular base, patrons of the twin mountain resorts between June and October enjoy a lively après-ski and restaurant scene. ... Read more »

Tongariro National Park is the home of Mount Ruapehu and spans 796 km2 of the North Island on the doorstep of Ohakune. The first national park in New Zealand in 1887 and incredibly, only the fourth in the entire world, Tongariro is part of the formidable Taupo Volcanic Zone. While Ohakune is eminently popular for winters sports, Mount Ruapehu offers four seasons of first-class scenery and recreation for intrepid visitors. From golf to a wide variety of adrenaline sports, the region is incomparable. Above all else however, Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Both a cultural and natural heritage site, the park is a venerable sanctuary for the Maori people and rolls out a fantastic volcanic wilderness chock-full of rare fauna and flora.
