Mount Ruapehu General Information

Mount Ruapehu’s proclamation that it delivers the biggest and baddest ski and snowboard terrain in New Zealand is buttressed by the presence of two phenomenal winter sports resorts. Both Whakapapa Ski Area and Turoa Ski Area make brilliant use of the active stratovolcano on the North Island to provide incomparable recreation for droves of powder-hungry fanatics from Auckland to Wellington. As a major summit in Tongariro National Park and the formidable Taupo Volcanic Zone however, Mount Ruapehu is about much more than winter sports. Four seasons of world-class scenery and recreation await intrepid visitors in fact, from golf to slightly more adrenaline-pumping pursuits. Above all else however, Tongariro National Park is one of New Zealand’s most spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Inscribed in 1990 as both a cultural and natural heritage site, the park is venerable for the Maori people and rather notably, unfurls a fantastic volcanic landscape absolutely riddled with delicate ecosystems and rare wildlife. As a linchpin of New Zealand’s first national park and amazingly, just the fourth established on the planet way back in 1887, Mount Ruapehu is sublime.
