Captivating Kaikoura

With a mighty snow-capped mountainside as a backdrop, plus gorgeous turquoise waters in the foreground, it’s hard to not be impressed at all the natural beauty surrounding you in Kaikoura. Just 180km (112mi) north of Christchurch, Kaikoura is a small town that punches way above its weight as the whale-watching capital of the world. ... Read more »

So step onboard a ship and keep an eye out for the gentle giants of the seas (not to mention the dolphins) as you learn about the world of whales on Whale Watch Kaikoura. Back on land, if you love beach views but hate the salty water – never fear! Take a dip in the Esplanade Poolby the waterfront, or just kick back with a beer and soak up the knockabout atmosphere down at the Strawberry Treepub.

KAIKOURA’S EVENTS

Rug up on shore and be thankful you aren’t in the water at the Coldwater Classic Surf Competition on the Queen’s Birthday long weekend in June.

Check out some eco-friendly recycled artworks at the annual Eco Art Kaikoura, also in June.

For a snapshot of town, make sure you’re around in July for the 48 Hours in Kaikoura photo competition.

Beat the winter blues and pull your socks up for the Kaikoura Whale Run each year in September.

Celebrate the abundance of the ocean (not to mention the local wine regions) at Kaikoura’s premier event, the yearly Seafest in October.

WHEN TO GO

· The seasons in Kaikoura are similar to Oz, just a bit colder!

· Winter usually hovers under 10ºC (50ºF), so pack plenty of layers.

· Summer, on the other hand, is mild and relatively dry – perfect dive weather!

GETTING AROUND

· There is a local bus service that will get you around Kaikoura and surrounds for next to nothing.

· Kaikoura itself is small, and a great way to see the sights is to rent a bike and pedal your way around town – and as far afield as your legs will carry you!
