Intriguing Invercargill

One of the southernmost cities in the entire world (let alone just New Zealand), Invercargill is blessed with a bounty of natural gardens and a modern cultural buzz at the heart of town, and is certainly worth some time in your Southland travels. ... Read more »

Delve into the largest pyramid in the Southern Hemisphere and discover some fascinating local history in the Southland Museum and Art Gallery. Wander through the flowers – from native plants to a Japanese garden – in the sprawling city-central Queens Park, or take a stroll down to Sandy Pointand see if you can find where the bootleg rum was made from cabbage trees around 150 years ago! Invercargill has a reputation for being cold and bleak – especially when the wind blows – but the welcome you’ll receive combined with spectacularly wild scenery will provide enough warm fuzzies to keep you going.

INVERCARGILL’S TOP 10

10. Civic Theatre This century-old masterpiece still holds a 1,050-seat theatre with an extra concert hall attached!

5. Thompson’s Bush Take advantage of one of the last remaining native forests in the area with an afternoon picnic in the wilderness.

9. Porter’s Lodge This quaint cottage is believed to be the oldest house in Invercargill – built circa 1866.

4. Otepuni Gardens Take a break from the CBD with a walk (or cycle) through these surprisingly secluded parklands.

8. Troopers’ Memorial Built to remember those who died in the Boer War and worth checking out.

3. Oreti Beach With a great view of Stewart Island (and a mysteriously – to the point of being downright spooky – foggy southern end), this beach is a must.

7. The City Art Gallery Hosts plenty of exhibitions and workshops all year round.

2. Southland Fire Service Museum Don your suspenders and play pretend when you check out this amazing collection of old fire engines!

6. The Railway Hotel Those crazy Kiwis didn’t know what they were up to when they built this hotel in a mishmash of Victorian, Edwardian and Baroque styles.

1. Anderson Park Art Gallery From early to contemporary, the stunning artworks on display are some of New Zealand’s finest.

INVERGARGILL EVENTS

Slurp down some molluscs with a chaser of wine at the annual Bluff Oyster and Food Festival each May.

Learn some local handicraft skills from the pros at the Dunkley’s Great New Zealand Craft Show in September.

From mouth-watering food to the latest in fashion and culture, look no further than A Taste of Southland in September.

Pick yourself up a free snag sanga and some chilled out tunes at The Fonterra Shout in October.

Grab some Christmas bargains at the Invercargill Markets in December.

WHEN TO GO

· Being so far south, Invercargill is quite frosty in comparison to Oz, usually averaging around 10ºC (50ºF).

· Summer temperatures can reach the mid-20s and the city enjoys around 16 hours of sunlight at the solstice.

· Bring plenty of layers in winter, when the mercury usually hovers at just above 1ºC (34ºF). Brrr!

GETTING AROUND

· There are plenty of taxis and shuttles that will be happy to take you door-to-door from the airport or hotel.

· The public bus service in Invercargill is pretty reliable and inexpensive. But if you’re feeling cash-strapped, hop on the Freebie bus around the town centre. It takes off every 15 minutes.

· To really immerse yourself in Invercargill, head to the Cycle Surgery and pick up a mountain bike for just $35 a day.
