As a gateway to the Grey River catchment area and vast Southern Alps, Greymouth is a vital destination in New Zealand. Mount Cook for one, is clearly visible in good weather and points of interest like Lake Brunner, Lake Summer Forest Park and the Pancake Rocks at Paparoa National Park provide peerless recreation and scenic pleasure. Kumara, a gold rush era town some 30 km from Greymouth, is well worth a look. In addition, events like the Greymouth Summer Fair, Wild Foods Festival and Art in the Park help make the town a worthwhile place to visit on the South Island.
