On the subject of glaciers, Westland National Park on the West Coast of the South Island has several for intrepid visitors to explore. The most popular are Fox Glacier and Franz Josef Glacier, both easily accessible from the township of Fox Glacier/Weheka. Though more drastic measures have been taken in recent years to curb the harmful effects of mass tourism and stem the retreat of the glacier ice, the park and indeed, glaciers themselves, remain near the top of New Zealand's natural wonders.
