Once a Roman military camp and member of the Hanseatic League, Nijmegen’s turbulent history has the city in the middle of some notable and violent tug-of-war turf battles. The city was the first to fall to Nazi Germany and underwent extensive carpet bomb damage throughout the Second World War. Modern Nijmegen is a lively city of 160,000 people and the principal node of a metropolitan area with well over 700,000 inhabitants. Though few ancient ruins survive to this day, the superlative Valkhof Museum is a fine repository of relics in Nijmegen. Other excellent points of interest in the fine Gelderland city include the Nationaal Bevrijdingsmuseum, Grote Markt, Museum Park Orientalis and for avid bicycle lovers, the Nationaal Fietsmuseum Velorama. The International Four Day March Nijmegen is one of the premier annual events in the Netherlands.
