De NieuweKerk is not only the most famous church in the Netherlands, but also one of Amsterdam’s architectural masterpieces. Constructed in the 15th century in the Renaissance style, NieuweKerk is graced by elaborate stained glass windows and a magnificent tower featuring a sundial which all Amsterdam’s clocks were based on until 1890. Although thrice threatened by fires, it suffered severe damage only once and has since been restored. Getting There
The most inexpensive, scenic, and culturally authentic way to reach DeNieuweKerk is by bicycle. There are few hills in Amsterdam, and numerous bicycle rental companies. Although De NieuweKerk can be reached by car, lack of local parking renders this option undesirable, and visitors would be better off using Amsterdam’s taxi service or public transportation. NieuweKerk is accessible via trams 1, 2, 4, 5, 9, 16, 24, and 25 at the Dam Square stop, and trains run at frequent intervals until a quarter past midnight.
