The heart and soul of the state, the city is a phenomenal destination. Together, the historic center of Oaxaca and archaeological site of Monte Albán is a brilliant UNESCO World Heritage Site. As one of the first cities in Mesoamerica, pre-Columbian Monte Albán was a major base of power and native culture from 500 BC to about AD 500. Historic Oaxaca contains a slew of incredible landmarks and monuments, from the Cathedral of the Virgin of the Assumption to the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, Oaxaca State Public Library and Santo Domingo de Guzmán Monastery.
