Acapulco Events
Right after Christmasends, the people of Acapulcocelebrate Three Kings Day, which is a Mexican gift-giving celebration. Many local eateries will provide special buffets for guests on this day.
Candlemas is a celebration in Acapulco marked by a parade with dancers, floats, and marching bands and evening fireworks displays. It takes place in February.
Holy Week, knownlocally as ‘Semana Santa’, is the Easter celebration in Acapulco that is held after Lent. It features a variety of festivities all over town.
The Acapulco Fair is a carnival held every year around the holidays. It has rides, food booths, games and prizes, and souvenir vendors. It is reminiscent of county fairs from the 1980s.
Dia de la Independencia is on 16 September, and there are always grand festivities and special venues all over Acapulco to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day.
La Quebrada Cliff Divers have been awing audiences in Acapulco for more than 70 years with their breathtaking leaps into the relatively shallow La Quebrada. They offer four shows per day between 1 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.
Virgin of Guadalupe Festival is held on 12 December, and it features a host of events, including a parade that concludes the traditional processions. Acapulco is alive with street parties, carnivals and dances until the sun comes up the next day.
Festival de Cine Negro is an annual tribute to films with themes relating to Africa. Several theatres throughout Acapulco hold screenings during this event.
Skimfest is an annual surfing event that takes place in the middle of May at the Playa Condesa in Acapulco.
The Acapulco Music Festival is the local annual music festival. Numerous Latino bands and artists gather to perform electrifying concerts for a week in May.
When to Go
While temperatures do not mark seasonal changes in Acapulco, the summer and early fall months are this area's rainy season.
The temperature does not change much during the year. The highs are typically in the mid to high 80s F (30°C), and the lows are in the low to mid 70s F (23°C).
It rains a great deal in the summer, with monthly accumulation reaching as much as 30 inches (80 cm).
Getting There
If you fly to your destination, the Juan N. Alvarez International Airport in Mexico City will be the main gateway into the country, but you can catch a short ‘puddle jumper’ to Acapulco and get there in a little more than a half hour.
You can also take a comfortable first-class bus to Acapulco from Mexico City. Prices will range from around 395 to 520 pesos depending on just how posh you like your ride.
Taxis and city buses are available for vicinity travel once you get to Acapulco, and the fares are quite cheap. It is not advisable to drive because the traffic is rough and parking is extremely limited.
