Only got cold water in shower even when set to hot. Water at handbasin hot. Weird? Staff at checkin a bit abrupt with no welcoming smile, perhaps because I didn't book direct. Only enough shampoo & shower gel for 1 person, but there were 2 of us. We were not asked if we wanted a morning paper but other guests were. Room was clean & tidy and hotel is very central.

Lovely hotel, well situated for Exeter. Rooms are clean and very comfortable. The restaurant is excellent, especially dinner. The breakfast buffet is a little pricey for what is offered.

Excellent location and good size rooms. Good breakfast Weak point : room service - very poor; the food ordered came after ONE hour 15 mins ! They dont even keep a water jug/glasses in the room and charge you 5 pounds when you ask for one !!

Our room was situated on the ground floor, we stayed about a year ago on the 1st floor in a nice modern clean room. Unfortunately this room was not. It was a disabled equiped guest room. Dark decor and wall paper hanging off the wall with mould growing around the bath. I was very unimpressed and thought did the hotel not think that all guests staying would enjoy the standard presented on the upper floor. As we were only staying for 1 night we put up and enjoyed the rest of the facilities instead. Nice breakfast and use of the pool with good central location made up for the 1980's styled cigarette stained room. If we stay again I will make sure we go up a floor.

The reception area of the hotel is beautiful.... the rooms are quite good. They could due with a bit of a refurb but nonetheless I would definitely stay there again. The location is great; walking distance in to town. Also enjoyed the pool & sauna.

The room was very comfortble and had been recently been refurbished to a hifg standard. The breakfast was excellent as is the location of the hotel which is only a few minutes walk from the cathedral. We very much enjoyed our stay and will visit again.

Attractive, quiet location right in heart of City, close to Cathedral and Main Shopping Centre. Very well run with pleasant, helpful staff. Ideal base to explore surrounding coast and countryside.

Nice pool and spa with quite long operating hours. Breakfast service very slow. Cooked breakfast is good, but the choice at the buffet not good enough for a hotel of the class the Southgate wants to be in.

We chose the Southgate as it was central and had leisure facilities. Met expectations. Great pool and Jacuzzi. Central location is great for bars etc near the Cathedral.

Extremely obliging staff - I had problems with connecting my laptop to the internet and they did all they could to sort it out.

Despite the pressure of a wedding party while we were there, the bar staff particularly were polite, friendly and good humoured. The reception staff were very businesslike. The exercise facilities were clean and well managed. We enjoyed our second stay as much as our first.
