Smashing St Julian’s

Once an unassuming fishing village on the coast of Malta, St Julian’s has been transformed into a playground for cashed-up locals and well-to-do tourists from around the world. It’s a town that can keep you busy day and night, from kite surfing at the cove of Il-Qaliet to partying all night in Paceville. ... Read more »

Given that getting the blood pumping one way or another is pretty much compulsory in St Julian’s, it’s appropriate that the town has been named after the patron saint of hunters. That’s not to say visitors aren’t able to sit and relax and watch the many colourful boats in the bay, but there’s always something new to hunt out and experience – particularly in the form of the many restaurants (including world-renowned, seafood-serving Quadro), cafés and bars.

St Julian’s Top 10

10. Spinola Palace Sitting on a small hill, it offers a great view over Spinola Bay.

5. St Julian’s Bay You can feel the fishing history here with a rainbow of coloured boats bobbing in the water.

9. Portomaso Tower Visit the bar on level 22 to take in the view from St Julian’s tallest building. It doesn’t get better-looking the more you have to drink – because it can’t.

4. Sliema Enjoy the sun at this built-up beach. Then enjoy a drink in a little café.

8. Portomaso Marina You won’t be sure whether to drool over the boats or the gorgeous cliffs.

3. Paceville Party till the wee hours in the nightclub district.

7. St George’s Bay Relax in the blue waters and take in the view of the blocky houses on the surrounding hills.

2. Balluta Bay With its art nouveau buildings and numerous cafés, this is the place to come swimming in style.

6. Dragonara Casino Being surrounded on three sides by the sea doesn’t necessarily mean the cash will flow like the waves, but it’s a nice idea.

1. Our Lady of Mount Carmel There is something strange about seeing a sky-scraping neo-Gothic church on the waterfront.

  • Villa Cassar Villa Torregiani – The stunning old villa is well preserved.

  • The Old Parish Church – Believed to be built during the 1580s, according to Bishop Tommaso Gargallo, when he had his visit in 1601.

St Julians Art & Culture

  • A Garden for Myriam – The luscious garden was designed by Architect Richard England who was born October 3, 1937, in Malta.
  • Garden of Apollo – It is dedicated to Apollo and designed as a secret garden.

St Julian’s Events

In June, the massive outdoor dance event Creamfields is held only just outside St Julian’s. Top international DJs and thousands of revellers come for the party.

In June or July, the lively festival of L-Imnarja involves singing, dancing and… donkey races!

The town becomes an explosion of colour in August for the St Julian’s Festival in honour of its patron saint.

Every December, the best musicians in Malta come to St Julian’s for the Bay Music Awards.

When To Go

Malta’s central Mediterranean location means temperatures are mild and the sun is generally shining!

St Julian’s is known for its extended May to October summers, when temperatures reach up to 31ºC (88ºF).

While St Julian’s doesn’t experience much rain, it does get scattered showers from October to February.

Getting Around

The simplest way to get around the city is to jump on-board one of the bright yellow buses.

Taxis abound in St Julian’s and are especially handy after a late night.

If travelling in a group, consider booking a minivan.
