The Sliema Rundown ... Read more »
Sliema is located in Malta, along the northeast coast. This is a major commercial city that contains many modern hotels, holiday rentals, cafes, restaurants and shopping areas. Sliema was once a quiet, peaceful fishing village, and its name is a reminder of its strong Catholic influence. Today, this city is one of the main resorts along Malta’s coast, which has caused the city to grow quickly. You will find great restaurants and cafes around Howard Street or along the waterfront. There are also nice pebble beaches with safe swimming. You are in luck if you love to shop. Sliema is known for being Malta’s best shopping district, with fashionable international labels represented, including Zara and Topshop. The city has many Catholic churches with very pretty architecture, including the Stella Maris Church, the Chapel of Our Lady of Graces, and the Madonna tas-Sacro Cuor Parish Church (Our Lady of the Sacred Heart). In August, the city has many parish feasts to honour Our Lady Stella Maris. In July, there is the feast of the Lady of Mount Carmel, and, in September, the feast of St Gregory.
When To Go
It is possible to visit Sliema at any time of the year. The summers in Malta are very hot, dry and sunny with almost no rain. Because Malta is an island, the cool sea breezes ensure temperatures rarely rise above 30°C (86°F). The water is the warmest at the end of August and beginning of September, making this a popular time for visitors who want to enjoy swimming. Summer is the high season with plenty of festivals, but the autumn is an excellent choice for those who want to avoid the crowds. However, from mid-September, rain and wind can be a problem. January is the coolest month, although the temperature rarely gets below 10°C (50°F).
High season: Mid-June to the end of August
Rainy season: December to the end of April
Highs rarely above 30°C (86°F), lows rarely lower than 10°C (50°F)
Getting There
There is only one airport on Malta, although the island is so small that any city can be easily reached from the airport. Flights are available from major cities around Europe. During the summer months, there are many private charters that fly into Malta. Besides flying to Malta, you can take ferries that run from Sicily to Valletta. You can take a train from any destination in Europe into Italy and then catch a ferry. From the waterfront, you can catch a taxi or door-to-door shuttle transfer into Sliema.
By air: Airlines that fly to Malta are Air Malta, Easyjet, Ryanair, BMI Baby and Thomas Cook charters
By ferry: Virtu ferries and Grimaldi ferries
Taxis, door-to-door shuttles available
