Gozo General Information
The Republic of Malta is a marvelous gem of the Mediterranean, with gorgeous seaside scenery, a perfect climate and exquisite culture to boot. Another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Malta, a notable amalgam of six Megalithic Temples, forms a pre-eminent tourist attraction on the island of Gozo. The Neolithic Ġgantija temple site is the only member of the inscription not on the island of Malta and so, lures a number of tourists from busy beach resorts like Bugibba to catch a ferry over to Gozo. The diminutive island is home to just over 30,000 people and is only 67 km2. Incredibly, traces of human life on Gozo date back more than 7,000 years and indeed, the modest settlements on the island feel a world apart from the cosmopolitan and chic enclaves of Malta’s main island. As a result, Gozo is a nonpareil escape from the hive of activity that sometimes characterizes Malta’s main beach resort areas and nightlife hubs. Quiet, historic Victoria is the de facto capital and primary gateway to the rest of the island.
