What you do have to choose from, however, is swimming, snorkelling, fishing, surfing and sipping coconut juice – which doesn’t sound too punishing, does it? Live coral reefs and sand bars make up the islands, with the reef creating a barrier against the sea and forming lagoons. This is where you’ll find Noonu Atoll’s most vibrant, colourful residents – and while they’re not much fun to party with, they do look stunning in photographs.

NOONU ATOLL EVENTS
- Mahool (Arabic verses praising the Prophet) are sung on Prophet Mohammed’s Birthday in March.
- The Maldives gained independence from Britain on 26 July, 1965, so that day marks the annual Independence Day festival.
- Being a Muslim country since 1153, the Islamic Eid Festival in July is an important celebration. Musical processions, military displays and games abound.
- Parades and marches on the street mark September’s National Day, a celebration of the liberation of the Maldives from the Portuguese.
- November celebrates the anniversary of the Maldives becoming a republic for the second time. Republic Day is celebrated with parades and special events.
WHEN TO GO
- With a fairly even temperature year-round, with average tops of 33ºC (91ºF), you can hardly choose a bad time to visit Noonu Atoll.
- Although humid, sea breezes will help you keep your cool.
- May and October experience the highest amount of rainfall.
- Arriving by seaplane will give you a great aerial perspective of the atoll and, if you’re lucky, its surrounding sea life.
- There are many forms of sea transport to choose from, including kayaks, catamarans and windsurfs.
- Strolling around is as easy as it sounds, with the place being suitably compact.
