Redang Island

Redang is a significant destination and popular beach resort hub off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The South China Sea island is a staple holiday escape for the nearby inhabitants of the city of Kuala Terengganu and, furthermore, for the considerable waves of tourists who pass through the sultanate and state of Terengganu every year. ... The inherent appeal of Pulau Redang is straightforward and unambiguous: beach resorts and more beach resorts. The island is also a notable sea turtle conservation area and indeed, has a plethora of decent dive sites for those who want to observe the endemic marine life. Redang is the linchpin of a vast archipelago national park that includes many other islands off the Terengganu coast. Though Redang has no points of interest beyond sun, sand and surf, Kuala Terengganu is close by. The lively city of 400,000 people has numerous attractions of note, from Kota Lama Duyung to Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque, Istana Maziah to Chinatown food hawkers.

Redang History

  • Redang Island Marine Park – Located on one of the islands called Pulau Pinangm, it is considered a full marine park under the Establishment of Marine Park Malaysia.
  • The H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S. Repulse – Two historic shipwrecks around the water of Redang Island.
  • Kampung Air (Water Village) – Comprised of wooden houses built on stilts.
  • Sungei Redang – The main river splices Redang Island through the middle.
  • Pasir Panjang – This being the largest beach of the Island where half a dozen resorts can be found.

Redang Art & Culture

  • Terengganu Batik – Located 45km off the coast of Redang Island, it displays highly sought after hand-drawn, block-printed Batik.
  • Handicraft Centre in Chendering, Terengganu – It features Malaysian handicrafts, displaying objects made from the fibre of pandanus leaves.
  • Noor Arfa Craft Complex – Well known for selling the most fashionable and unique hand-drawn Batik.
  • Art of Keris Making – Considered a dying art in Malaysia, it allows the visitors to see the Keris in all its ancestral glory.
  • Terrengganu Museum Structure – It showcases the extensive collection of textiles and weaving techniques.

Redang Shopping

  • Blue Redang Enterprise – One of the two gift shops in Redang Pelangi Resort selling local crafts, T-shirts, snacks, drinks and more.
  • Laguna Redang Island Resort Gift Shop – Mini-mart cum souvenir shop belonging to the largest resort at Pasir Panjang Beach.
  • Roadside of Kuala Terengganu – Buy fresh lengkor, salted fish and dry shrimp at roadside.
  • Redang Bay Resort – One of the largest operations, it offers one store for food and drinks and another for clothes and souvenir.
  • Redang Pelangi Resort – Convenience store and a souvenir shop offering a variety of snacks, drinks and souvenirs.

Redang Island Nightlife

Much like the rest of conservative Malaysia, there are few nightlife venues on Redang Island. Redang Island’s night-time scene is relegated to the hotel resorts, which have bars and restaurants serving alcohol. Some of the popular spots around the islands include the Berjaya Redang Beach Coffee House Terrace, which is a live music spot where visitors hang around after dinner to drink, chat, and socialize. The Redang Reef Resort has karaoke in its open-air restaurant bar every night. The Redang Beach Resort and Redang Pelangi Resort host fun beach parties at night, which attract lively international crowds looking to dance.
