It presents a fine contrast of worlds, both old and new; Modern skyscrapers and towers rise above magnificent mosques and temples; and a colourful mix of cultures is well alive in the streets brought out by the influences from the Indian, Chinese and European who have made their marks in the peninsula. Attractions
The emergence of Kuala Lumpur as a world-class metropolis is obvious when viewing the many attractions the city has to offer.
Standing at a height of 452 metres, the iconic Petronas Twin Towers used to be the tallest building in the world until the rise of another giant in Taipei. Though it is not possible to visit the top, the 41st and 42nd floor skybridge link can accommodate visitors everyday. Queuing can take a while though so be sure to be there early!
Housing the former British government, the majestic Sultan Abdul Samad Building represents stately Moorish architecture. It now holds the Supreme and High Courts. Infront of it is the famous Merdeka Square where you can find Asia's highest flagpole.
The Lake Gardens, a splendid area covering hectares and hectares of greenery in the middle of the bustling city is perfect for escaping the traffic and onslaught of crowds. Within this vast oasis, you can find the National Monument, Orchid Gardens, Deer Park and not too far are the Butterfly Park and Bird Park as well.
If you're interested to immerse yourself in Malaysian history, the National Museum has a varied display of Malay artifacts.
To see fine examples of Islam architecture, the mosques are well worth a visit.
The largest one in the nation is the National Mosque, which rests on such well-manicured hushed surroundings. The dome has 18 points representing the 13 states of Malaysia and the five central pillars of the Islamic religion.
More enchanting however is the Friday Mosque, the oldest one in the city. It has a rich historical flair to it as it is built on the place where the early settlers first stood. Lastly, the colourful Sri Mahamariaman Temple near Chinatown is another religious structure to include in one's itinerary.
Going to the market areas is a fun way of discovering KL's culture. Chinatown runs the whole stretch of Jalan Petaling. Shops are open for business during the daytime until Pasar Malam (night market) takes the reins giving the street an energetic vibe with its stalls, eateries and the crowds whizzing back and forth. An assortment of wares ranging from imitations, souvenirs, clothes, herbal medicines and local finery are on the market here.
For more comfortable shopping, malls are a good option. The area of Golden Triangle, in Jalan Sultan Ismail offers quality items. The Suria KLCC is a huge complex of hundreds of speciality shops with plenty of dining choices to boot.
Events
Festivals mostly follow various religious dates, largely based on the Muslim calendar as Malaysia is a Muslim state.
Hari Raya Puasa brings familes together following a month long fast.
Thaipusam is a Hindu festival in January or February covering three days. Hindu areas such as Little India come alive.
Deepavali, the Hindu festival of lights comes into being in October or November. The city is lit up to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth into every home.
Catering to the Chinese in Malaysia, Chinese New Year is celebrated in typical fashion in January or February with lion dances and firecrackers to usher in the Lunar New Year.
Malaysia also proudly hosts the Grand Prix and in March you can take in Formula 1 racing.
Climate
Hot Season (January to December) 23 - 32oC; it's hot and humid all year round with daily downpours during the rainy season
