For Surabaya it has a good location, but its staff are, to put it bluntly, brilliant - very friendly, helpful and go out of their way to help

This is the famous old colonial Oranje Hotel, where the famous "flag incident" occured in 1946. A number of Dutch ex-internees raised the Dutch flag and sang the Dutch national anthem. This was not appreciated by Indonesian nationalists, who had already proclaimed the Indonesian republic. There is a memorial plaque right there. The hotel is still very much of the old colonial style, with a lot of original furnishings. It is very beautiful.

The "Raffles" equivalent for Surabaya. I will definately stay there again. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff.

Fantastic hotel. Original building itself is very old and colonial style but it has been done up superbly and is a great hotel. Location is great - can walk to shopping Mall etc. Only 1 negative comment is the cost of internet.
