The Tokyo Metropolitan Central Wholesale Market, as Tsukiji is formally know, is really two markets in one. The first is a wholesale market, where Tokyo’s incomparable and insatiable desire for fresh fish and seafood is on display at a daily auction that takes place in the wee hours. The other section of Tsukiji is a vast ensemble of wholesale and retail stalls that sell fish and seafood of course, but a wide array of other comestible goods and kitchen items as well.
Vitals and Tips
Tsukiji Fish Market is easily accessible from either Tsukijishijō Station on the Toei Ōedo Line or Tsukiji Station on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line.
The market is open every day except Sunday and civic holidays. The fish and seafood auction usually starts at 5:00 a.m. and wraps up some two hours later.
