The comuni of Forte dei Marmi, Pietrasanta, Seravezza and Stazzema straddle the foothills of the Apuan Alps and are perpetual favorites with visitors from all over Italy and Europe. Together, the four towns offer superb heritage architecture, unblemished scenery and untold leisure and recreation. Viareggio is the biggest city in Versilia, with over 60,000 full-time residents who have to compete for space in summer when tourist crowds flock to the coastal resort. Every year the city throws one of the most legendary carnival celebrations in Europe.
