The province of Venice is part of the Veneto region of northern Italy. Its picturesque capital Venice is home to many canals filled with gondolas carrying couples on honeymoons. Whilst the city of Venice draws most tourists, there is much more to learn about, see and experience in the Venice province. As an area full of water ports, there is no shortage of stunning views, fresh seafood and a welcoming climate. The Venice province covers an area of 2,462 square kilometres (950.6 square miles) stretching along the coast of the Adriatic Sea. One of the most popular sights in the region is Chioggia, a large fishing port town and referred to as the ‘Little Venice’. The city was built on wooden piles and connected by a stone bridge to the mainland. Not far from Chioggia, you will find Lido de Jesolo, a tourist city that receives millions of visitors each year and is famous for its 12-km-long (7.5-mile-long) pedestrian shopping zone. Portogruaro is another city within the Venice province that offers many attractions, such as the Fountain of Pila Corte, designed by the sculptor Giovanni Antonio in 1494.

The Venice province has a subtropical humid climate, meaning cool winters and warm summers. The city has very high humidity, with the highest temperatures found in July and August. Due to its location on the Adriatic coast, there are frequent rain showers and thunderstorms in the spring and autumn seasons, which tend to cause flooding. This is referred to as the acqua alta, and during this time, you may want to bring along waterproof shoes or boots.
