Tantalising Treviso
Jealousy can be an ugly thing, but while Treviso suffers from a touch of the green-eyed monster – referring to itself as ‘Little Venice’ – ugliness is not a word that applies here.
While it may not be as flashy and fabulous as its more famous neighbour, Treviso has a quiet charm all its own. Remnants of painted frescoes are still visible on many dwellings and there are numerous architecturally interesting buildings and piazzas to explore, like the civic heartPiazza dei Signoriand the Duomo.
With a prosperous and comfortable population, you’ll avoid all the tourist kitsch of the better known centres. Treviso’s claim to fame is the international clothing empire, Benetton, which has a store near the Palazzo dei Trecento. There are also plenty of cafés, bars and restaurants to enjoy – and hey, it may be in Venice’s shadow, but it ain’t sinking, either!
