Sensational Sicily
If you think quaint places are also boring places, maybe Sicily – the Mediterranean island getting ‘kicked’ by the boot of Italy – will be more up your alley. With rich architecture and vibrant culture speckled with Mafia corruption and sleazy nightclubs, Sicily adds a bit of spice to the Italian seaside model. ... Read more »
You can never quite be sure what you’re going to get in Sicily, but whether you find culture or seediness, at least the latter won’t be emblazoned with gaudy neon signs. Scicli houses amazing architecture and is set beautifully amongst climbing rocky cliffs, while the Acropolis is an astonishing example of the power and inventiveness of the ancients. TheStromboli Crater is even older (over 40,000 years) and is a site to behold even if you’re not a nature lover. All in all, Sicily is a place to visit time and time again.

SICILY EVENTS
January brings what is arguably the most beautiful festival in Sicily, Carnival in Acireale. Its triumphant moment is the parade with flower-decorated floats, masked dancers and acrobats, and an uncontained audience.
Starting off as a deeply religious festival, May’s Feast of Saints Alfio is now associated more with lively dancing and having a great time.
The patron saint of the island is celebrated in July with Pancras of Taormina, a moving procession and church service that provides a great glimpse into the religious side of the island.
October’s Grape Harvest Festival is a mad-dash effort to pick all those grapes before it gets too cold. Tourists partake to get involved in the local scene.
Christmas in Sicily is really a sight to behold, with locals going to borderline ridiculous lengths to decorate their houses and businesses.
WHEN TO GO
· Do not visit during August unless you’re looking for high humidity, lots of crowds and shut-up businesses.
· September and October are the best times to visit. Temperatures are milder and the crowds are thinning.
· February is especially beautiful, as flowers are in full bloom, including the famous almond groves.
GETTING AROUND
· Public transport within the Sicilian cities is safe and reliable, but becomes chaotic on weekends.
· Coaches are a great way to travel, with fierce competition keeping costs low.
· The best way to travel between Sicily and its neighbouring islands is by boat.
