Favourite Cities and Hotels in Italy

The incomparable island of Sardinia may be part of Italy but is not of Italy per se. A veritable country within a country, the Mediterranean gem is proudly autonomous and boasts a wholly singular cultural landscape. To discuss Sardinia as one homogeneous tourist destination then is problematic, since the island, at 24,000 km2, is more vast than entire nation-states like Belize, Israel, Slovenia, Montenegro, Jamaica and Lebanon.

For some, Sardinia conjures plush and chichi seaside resorts like the Costa Smeralda, Budoni and San Teodoro and, indeed, the island is a de facto playground for Euro élites. Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, is a lively city of 160,000 people, full of heritage architecture and convivial charm. Major landmarks in the historic town include the Chiesa di Santo Sepolcro, Ghetto degli Ebrei, Basilica di San Saturnino and Museo Archeologico Nazionale. Other important towns in Sardinia include Quartu Sant’Elena, Sassari, Olbia and Alghero. The handsome medieval comune of Bosa is picture-postcard beautiful and the rich cultural vibe of Oristano, home to 33,000 people, comes alive every Carnival season for the venerable Sa Sartiglia equestrian tournament. While Sardinia’s Mediterranean coastline seduces, some of the most extraordinary spots on the island dot the interior. As such, it behooves visitors to tear themselves away from the beach and explore.

Sardinia Rundown

If you are more interested in nature than the club scene, the large island of Sardinia is a great spot to visit on holiday. This Italian territory is hugely popular for sailing and has numerous ports, but the Costa Smeraldaarea is the busiest spot for maritime activity. There are a few interesting small nearby islands you can explore as well. Asinara National Park is known in Sardiniafor its intriguing albino donkeys. You can also visit the Maddalena Archipelago on the north side and San Pietro, home to a Genoese fishing community, on the south, along with Sant'Antioco. Sardinia has a lot of coastal land with many gorgeous beaches, such as Cala Gonone, Muravera and Arbatax along the east coastThe Alghero area offers many fascinating grottoes and underwater caves that are perfect for scuba diving. If you enjoy mountain climbing, you should head over to Sardinia’s Monte Limbara Range or the Domusnovas areaSpelunkers also enjoy Domusnovas for its large caves. Those looking for more tame adventure can enjoy this wondrous island for its various hiking trails and the huge sand dunes in Marina di Arbus as well as some very large beaches. ... Read more »

When To Go

Sardinia has mostly a typical Mediterranean climate with changing seasons, but the weather can vary from coast to coast due to the hilly terrain. Summers are quite hot and dry, with highs reaching up to 35°C (95°F). The temperatures are heavily affected by the hot, southeast winds called ‘Scirocco’. It cools down to around 20°C (68°F) during the fall months, but Sardinia is subject to frequent storms during this season as well. The strong northwest ‘Maestrale’ winds take over in September, helping to cool things down a bit. Winter can be chilly with lows around 6-7°C (43-44°F), but it rarely freezes in Sardiniaexcept in the more elevated mountain areas. Spring is somewhat rainy but pleasant, with high temperatures of 14-17°C (57-63°F). This is the mildest time of year in Sardinia.

  • Summer highs 35°C (95°F); winter lows 6-7°C (43-44°F)
  • Spring/autumn are mild, rainy
  • Windy year-round

Getting There

Air travellers can fly into one of three airports close to Sardinia. Cagliari is used most often, and it is a short bus ride to Sardinia. The other two airports are Alghero-Fertilia and Olbia, which offer fewer international flights than Cagliari. You can get to Sardinia quickly by bus from any of these airports. An alternative mode of travel to this city is by ferry, which is offered by several different lines. Getting around in Sardinia is cheap and easy by bus and train, but many visitors find that renting a car is more convenient for travelling to more out-of-the-way places that are not as touristy as the closer attractions. If you have money to burn on more luxurious transport, you can always charter a yacht or sail-boat to explore the coast.

  • Fly to Cagliari, Olbia or Alghero-Fertilia
  • Public bus/trains by ARST
  • Frequent ferries to north/south coasts
