The Riviera’s central node is the extraordinary city of Genoa, which, in of itself, is a travel destination that deserves much more than a cursory tour. Genoa is at the midway point of the Italian Riviera and sets up nicely as a platform for tourists to get out and explore the copious gems that dot the coast. Without question, however, the most popular hot spots on the Riviera reside on the Levante section, between Genoa and Capo Corvo. The lovely comune of Santa Margherita Ligure is part of the Riviera Levante and a mere 30 km from Genoa and approximately 70 km from the extraordinary UNESCO World Heritage Site of Portovenere, Cinque Terre, and the Islands of Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto. Santa Margherita Ligure is a handsome port village of 10,000 people that offers tranquil seaside sanctuary and a few landmarks of note. Some of the best include Santa Margherita Ligure Castle, the Basilica of St. Margaret of Antiochia, Abbey of San Gerolamo and Villa Durazzo.
