Rome Hotels near Sistine Chapel

The walls of the Sistine Chapel, like Caesar’s Gaul, are divided into three parts. Their lower section contains draperies done in gold and silver fresco; their central area has balanced portrayals of the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ; and their upper section, beneath its windows, has a gallery of Papal portraits up to the time of Sixtus IV. On the lunettes above the windows, Michelangelo later painted images of Christ’s ancestors. ... Read more »
These wall frescos were the works of the Italian masters Boticelli, Perugin, Roselli, and Ghirlandaio, but they were both literally and artistically overshadowed by the ceiling to come. Twenty-five years after the Sistine Chapel’s completion, in 1508, Pope Julius II ”invited” the Italian sculptor Michelangelo to design and create a painting of the Twelve Apostles on the barrel vault ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.
Michelangelo preferred sculpting to painting, but he also preferred being in the Papacy’s favour over being excluded from it, so when Julius II agreed to let him choose his own subject, he accepted the task. The ceiling, which had originally been painted bright blue and dotted with gilt stars, measures over 550 square metres and at its highest point arches 18 metres above the Chapel floor.
His finished work contains over 300 figures, taken from the scenes in the Book of Genesis from the Creation of the World to the Great Flood. Michelangelo’s rendering of the hand of God reaching out to infuse the hand of Adam with life may be, after the Mona Lisa, the most recognized artwork in the world.
Nearly twenty-five years after competing the Chapel’s main ceiling, Michelangelo was commissioned by Pope Paul III to create an altarpiece fresco, and he worked on the Last Judgment from 1536 to 1541. His work came under criticism for its nude portrayal of Biblical figures. The offending body parts, after Michelangelo’s death, were draped in vestments or loincloths by his former student Daniele da Volterra.
Four centuries of candle smoke from hundreds of thousands of Sistine Chapel Masses eventually masked its walls and ceiling in so much grime that. Beginning in 1980, the Chapel underwent a twenty-year restoration.. When the result was finally unveiled in 1999, its vibrant colours and contrasts led many art experts to suggest the need for a new generation of books on Renaissance painting techniques.
The Papal Election at the Sistine Chapel

During the process the voting College of Cardinals are sequestered in the Chapel where a chimney has been installed. Hundreds of millions of Christian all over the globe wait for white smoke to emerge for the chimney, indicating a new Pope has been chosen.
