Rome Hotels near Porta Portese

One of the oldest parts of Rome, the Trastevere, received its name from its location “trans Tiber”, or “across the Tiber,” and is an area on the Tiber’s left bank between the Vatican and Janiculum Hills. Rome was already a thousand years old when the Emperor Aurelianus decided he could not leave the Trastavere and Janiculum Hill undefended a moment longer, and enclosed them within the city walls. ... The Porta Portuensis, from which the Via Portuense led, was an opening in the southernmost part of the walls surrounding the Trastavere, and the avenue by which merchants travelled to the docks and warehouses which the Emperors Claudius and Trajan had built along the Tiber River; to oversee the loading and unloading of their wares to and from boats on the Tiber.
The Trastevere and Via Portuense, in other words, have been the site of Roman commerce for nearly twenty centuries. The Porta Portese, which Pope Urban VIII ordered built in the 1600s on the site of the earlier Porta Portuensis, continues that tradition with the Sunday morning flea market, Rome’s largest commercial enterprise.
What to Expect from the Porta Portese
Beginning at around 7:00 AM, over four thousand vendors of everything from used clothing, to faux but realistic Etruscan antiquities, to genuine antiques gather in an open-air market extending from the Porta Portese to the Stazione Trastevere. There are leather and fur stalls, household appliance stalls, and a Russian vendors’ area where Red Army paraphernalia is offered alongside Matryoshka dolls.
Genuinely rare and valuable books vie for attention with counterfeit Gucci and Louis Vuitton, designer T-shirts, and beach towels. Shoppers should come prepared to bargain, and to protect their valuables from sticky fingers at every turn. And turns are plentiful, as the Porta Portese wanders seemingly at random through apartment blocks and alleyways.
The Porta Portese runs until between 1:00 and 2:00 PM, but its reputation for having hard-to-find items at flea market prices means that the best buys are usually gone by 10:00AM. Latecomers who have missed their chance, however, can always turn their Sunday morning outing into a trek back in time. A visit to Santa Maria at the center of Trastavere will find them in a church dating back to around 350 AD, with mosaics from the twelfth and thirteenth centuries.
Where to Stay Near the Porta Portese
A stay at the luxurious and thoroughly modern Ripa Hotel Rome, on the left bank of the Tiber in the heart of the Trastevere, will put visitors within a kilometer of the Porta Portese and just minutes away from the Vatican.
