Pantheon
Coming from a word meaning “to every god,” The Pantheon was built to honour all of the gods of ancient Rome. The iconic dome of the Pantheon remains the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome, even though it is more than two thousand years old. It has no visible arches or reinforcements to hold up the whole structure, yet it is one of the best preserved of Rome’s many historical buildings and visitors still flock to the Piazza della Rotunda to snap photos of the well preserved granite portico and ornate Corinthian columns. The Pantheon itself holds the remains of the artist, Raphael and not much else. The Pantheon is an ancient symbol of architectural excellence and has been enormously influential on Western architecture. ... Read more »

- Marvel at the ornate sunken panels lining the interior of the Pantheon dome, which was originally intended to symbolize the arched vault of the heavens.
- Visit the Chapel of Saint Joseph in the Holy Land where a confraternity of 16th century artists and musicians of Rome was formed by a Canon of the Catholic Church.
- Visit the third niche to see the sarcophagus that houses the mortal remains of Raphael.
Getting There
Due to Rome’s small area, the Pantheon, along with most of the other historical sites, can easily be traversed on foot. The Piazza Barberini Metro stop is a fifteen-minute walk from the Pantheon, so many visitors take walking tours that begin at this station. There is a hop-on, hop-off tour bus that runs between major attractions in Rome and allows passengers to get off where they please. The regular bus stop is at Largo di Torre Argentina, which is 400 metres from the Pantheon and will also be about a fifteen-minute walk. Taxis can always get you where you want to go but most visitors find the beauty of Rome’s ancient streets to be a welcome distraction best explored on foot.
