Coliseum

The fabled Coliseum, originally known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is perhaps Rome’s most recognisable structures. Built between 70-80 AD, the Coliseum has witnessed events ranging from simulated sea battles and brutal gladiatorial contests to recreations of natural scenes and dramatic performances. Today, the Coliseum is more tourist attraction than arena, though it’s used for religious purposes from time to time. In 2011, a private sponsor agreed to fund a 25 million euro restoration of Italy’s iconic ancient structure. Tourists have recently been allowed access to the network of tunnels under the Coliseum, originally used as quarters for the gladiators and pens for savage beasts. ... Read more »

Coliseum Top 3

  • Be thoroughly awed by the magnificent ancient architecture and history of the Coliseum, Rome’s most iconic and fascinating building.
  • Gear up for a half-day walking tour of the Coliseum, and learn some of the finer historical details from your expert guide.
  • Imagine wielding a short-sword on a visit to Ludus Magnus, the remains of the gladiator training school, just to the east of the Coliseum.

Getting There

Rome’s FiumicinoAirport services the city, and the 26 kilometre journey to its centre can be achieved on rail, taxi, tram, Terravision shuttle bus, or the regular blue bus service. To get to the Coliseum, bus routes 60 and 81 go right pas it, and the Coliseum rail station is just two stops from the main Termini station in central Rome. Those who don’t wish to walk around the surrounding areas of the Coliseum can take a segway tour which covers the surrounding areas. Hop-on/hop-off buses are also on the route, and are equipped with audio commentary.
