Circus Maximus

Visitors who walk the ancient grounds of Circus Maximus in Rome can almost hear the thunder of hooves and delighted screams of the hundreds of thousands of spectators that once gathered for the chariot races the stadium was built for. Circus Maximus is located in a valley between the Palatine and Aventine hills and was first built in ancient times for Ludi, the public games that were a key part of Roman religious festivals. Although little remains of the original structure, Circus Maximus is still one of the highlights of the city centre and an occasional venue for concerts. ... Read more »

Circus Maximus Top 3

  • Stroll through the Piazza del Popolo and see the Obelisco Flaminio monument that dominates the centre. The obelisk was transported to Rome from Egypt by Augustus in the year 10 BC.
  • Climb to the top of Rome's Palatine Hill, where you will enjoy panoramic views of the ruins of Circus Maximus and the surrounding area.
  • Walk to the nearby Colosseum to see a marvel of ancient Roman engineering that was built in the 1st century AD and played home to brutal gladiator fights and mock sea battles.

Getting There

Driving and parking in the city can be a stressful ordeal so it is best to get to Circus Maximus using either the subway or the bus system. Take the red line of the Metro to the Circo Massimo stop and you will be able to see Circus Maximus when you emerge onto the street. Although the cluster of ancient sites found in Rome seem perfect for pedestrians, the traffic can be dangerous so it is advised to always pay attention to traffic control devices. The Leonardo Express is the best way to reach the city centre from the airport.
