Basilica Ulpia

Rome’s Basilica Ulpia was created around 112 AD, and is one of the most imitated buildings in Western culture. Unlike most basilicas, this one was not created to honour God, but to honour Emperor Trajan. Its main purpose was to house administrative and government officials whilst they worked. The ornate colonnades and gilded accents make it easy to understand why other cities attempt to copy the style of the Basilica Ulpia. The roof was once covered in copper and the walls made of marble, but the intervening centuries have since worn down the basilica, leaving only a few colonnades. ... Read more »

Basilica Ulpia Top 3

  • Before visiting, search online for maps and images of the original Basilica Ulpia in Rome, and when you visit, you can try to figure out where each of the original pieces went.
  • Stop by the amazingly well preserved and stunning Trajan’s Column, which celebrated Trajan’s conquest of the Dacians.
  • For an unconventional travel experience, order some takeout, sit in the area overlooking the basilica, and enjoy watching Rome’s most infamous colony of feral cats.

Getting There

The Basilica Ulpia is located along the Via dei Fori imperiali, and is on the way to the Coliseum. If you are in central Rome, the best way to get to Basilica Ulpia is to walk. It takes about 2 minutes to walk from Central Station, and only 10 minutes from the Coliseum. Along the way, you will be able to see many other fascinating historical sites, such as the Piazza Venetia and Arch of Constantine. When walking, be wary of pickpockets. Visitors can also take buses 60, 75, 85, 87,117, 175, 810 and 850 to reach the basilica.
