Rome Hotels near Arch of Constantine

Arco di Constantino

The Arco di Constantino (or the Arch of Constantine) is located near the Coliseum in Rome, Italy. It was built in 315AD to celebrate Constantine's victory against Maxentius (the previous emperor). The triple arch sits across the road emperors used when triumphantly entering Rome. Carved reliefs are sculpted in the fascinating style of the 4th century, during which time art moved from the idealized late Hellenistic period to the more cartoonish style often seen in medieval works. This arch has attracted art and history lovers for centuries, but is remarkable even to the untrained eye. ... Read more »

Arco di Constantino Top 3

  • Take a load off your feet, and even snack on some of Rome’s famous cheese and bread, whilst sitting by the fenced greenway and contemplating the rich history of this spot.
  • Stick around and catch the arch as its white marble changes with the evening, a lovely way to watch the sunset in Rome.
  • Get as close as you can to Arco di Constantino on the south side (the Coliseum will be behind you to the left) and look for a headless Constantine in the rectangular frieze to the right.

Getting There

Getting to the Arco di Constantino is easy. You can take a taxi for relatively cheap, hop on the metro, or just walk. If taking the metro, take the blue line to the stop Colesseo. If walking, pick up a cheap (or free) Rome map at the Tourist Information Centre or at your hotel. Most of the city has wide sidewalks, and much of it is pedestrian only, which makes the walk pleasant and a good way to happen upon Roman ruins. Keep your eye out for the Coliseum—once you’ve found it, finding the arch is a breeze.
