Since Rome is over 2,500 years old, you can bet it has more attractions than one could possibly see in a few days. As the capital of Italy and the seat of the ancient Roman Empire, Rome has a long and rich history. It is huge, with numerous districts, but if you find it overwhelming just start at the Historic Centre and go from there. This central area has a number of attractions that include churches, monuments and palaces, as well as fountains and ancient ruins. The most visited part of this centre is the Colosseo, which is the location of the more famous ancient structures, including the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. Other important landmarks here are the Forum of Augustus, the Capitoline, and the Forum and Markets of Trajan. Rome’s Historic Centre also includes the Vatican and the numerous landmarks, relics and exhibits associated with the Papal City State. Just south of the Vatican is the artistic Trastevere area along the Tiber River. You can find the famous Spanish Steps as well as the Villa Borghese in the North Centre of Rome. Go to Old Rome for the Pantheon and a multitude of glorious Renaissance period landmarks.
