The Tower of Pisa is no ordinary bell tower of course. Construction began on the tower in 1173 and took some two hundred years to finish. A thin foundation on wobbly subsoil was the cause of the initial tilt and though builders sought to compensate for the lean over subsequent decades, the fate of the tower was complete. Today, the Torre Pendente is one of the most venerable symbols and popular tourist attractions in Italy. While not the only tower with a prominent lean in the world, Pisa’s is certainly the most iconic.

Although Pisa is a convenient day trip from Florence and other parts of Tuscany, the city is worth a short stay. A university city of some 90,000 people, Pisa has a lot of charm. The Duomo museum and Museo delle Sinopie are notable points of interest. Others include the monuments of Piazza dei Cavalieri, Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza XX Settembre.
