Maggiore and Orta Lakes are two of the most pristine waterways in Italy, with numerous towns and inherent landmarks to explore. Maggiore is immense and straddles both Switzerland and Italy - namely Lombardia and Piemonte - while Orta rests completely in the latter. The dominant group of attractions in the area are the Sacri Monti, a collection of UNESCO World Heritage chapels that date back to the 16th and 17th century. The Sacro Monte in Orta San Giulio contains beautiful works of art and offers wonderful views of Lake Orta. The Maggiore lakeside gem of Stresa is particularly idyllic and has a famous former visitor in Ernest Hemingway, who set part of his classic Farewell to Arms in the town. Like many other destinations in the Maggiore and Orta region, Stresa boasts many grand lakeside villas.
