To walk the streets of Lucca is to leap back in time. The Etruscans were the first to settle the city and in 180 AD, Lucca became a colony of the Roman Empire. The original Roman street grid in fact, is still manifest in the historic city center of Lucca. The district is replete with heritage landmarks and monuments, from the Duomo di San Martino and Ducal Palace, to the Basilica di San Frediano and Palazzo Pfanner. Superb annual events in Lucca include the Puccini Opera Festival and Lucca Summer Festival.
