L’Aquila General Information
Extolling the virtues of a place like L’Aquila has never been difficult for those charged with the task. In the wake of a capricious and violent natural disaster however, the job is done evermore willingly and indeed, with plenty more gusto. The history of the region of Abruzzo is infamously littered with earthquakes but on April 6, 2009, a big one struck the province of L’Aquila and eponymous capital city. While structural signs of the earthquake’s wrath still linger, L’Aquila has rebounded gamely and vigorously. The proud city of 73,000 people after all, is still a beauty. L’Aquila is nestled in a picturesque river valley flanked by the dramatic Apennine Mountains, with spectacular Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park nearby. L’Aquila’s compact cityscape of Baroque and Renaissance architecture is notable, even by Italy’s lofty standards, and unfurls a remarkable array of treasures. Some of the best include the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio, Rocca Calascio fortress, Museo Nazionale d'Abruzzo in the Forte Spagnolo, Basilica di San Bernardino and iconic Fountain of the 99 Spouts.
