Italian Alps General Information

The Valle d’Aosta, or Aosta Valley, is a foremost span of the Alps in Italy, full of picture-postcard hamlets, exquisite mountain scenery and indelible culture. The diminutive region of Italy is home to 120,000 people and borders France, Switzerland and Piemonte. As a result, the overall feel and flavour of the Aosta is notably alpine and, needless to say, displays a vastly different side of Italy than say, Tuscany or Sicily. ... Read more »

Visitors to this remarkable, uppermost section of the country then, may encounter snippets of conversation in Valdôtain, the native dialect, and hearty culinary fare in line with the mountain milieu and climate. The capital and heart of the Aosta Valley is the small city of Aosta, which sits near the mouth of Mont Blanc Tunnel. The town of 35,000 people is 115 km north of Torino, 255 km east of Grenoble, 135 southeast of Geneva and 185 km west of Milan. Easily accessible and well worth a day or two of holiday time, Aosta is a handsome platform from which to explore the Alps at large. Important points of interest in the capital and Aosta Valley region include Aosta Cathedral, Castello di Fenis, the Arch of Augustus and Gran Paradiso National Park.
