Forte di Belvedere

Sitting on a promontory overlooking picturesque Southern Florence, the Forte di Belvedere is a splendid little Medici architectural confection encased in a hard crust of cutting-edge, 16th century military fortifications. As well as being a sign of prestige, this combination of fortress and stately home was also commissioned by Grand Duke Fernando I de Medici between 1590-1595 as a treasure house, and to provide shelter for the family during times of civil unrest and pestilence. Today, it’s a fascinating artefact from the family whose lust for power rekindled Western Civilization. ... Read more »

Forte di Belvedere Top 3

  • Relax on the grassy fort grounds and look out over the walls to see stunning views of South Florence.
  • Admire the collection of traditional and contemporary art held within this palace, as well as the charming design of the mansion itself whilst in Florence.
  • Know what you’re looking at: the fort’s star-shaped, or race italienne, design, was originally conceived by Michelangelo, although the acclaimed Florentine designer Bernardo Buontalenti was in charge of Forte di Belvedere.

Getting There

The Forte di Belvedere is located directly across the street from the beautiful Garden of Boboli, which is situated near a number of other popular tourist attractions. We’d recommend walking, because accessing this area will take you less than 25 minutes from any other place in the city. Florence does not have a subway, but bus lines D, or Ferruci 01, and 36, towards P.Za Adua Station, will drop you off at the Gardens. Get off at the stop for San Felice or Pitti. Once there, walk across the gardens to Forte di Belvedere. Parking is available directly outside the fort
