Lake, also known as Lago di Como, is one of Italy's most popular lakes as well as its deepest. The lake is surrounded by extraordinary views, villas and resort villages. There are also plenty of paths for trekking and many water activities. Located in the northern Italian Lakes District, Como Lake has been a holiday destination since Roman times. When To Go
Como Lakeis a popular holiday spot for weekenders from Milan, as well as for foreigners from all over the world. The months of July and August are somewhat crowded, but the spring and fall months are not as busy so are the best times to visit. As for winter, there are several services that are closed, although there is skiing in the nearby mountains. During the winter, the weather is mild and still relatively pleasant. Visitors should take note that evening temperatures do cool down drastically even when it is warm during the day.
December to February (winter): Average highs of 13°C (55°F) and lows -4°C (25°F)
March to May (spring): Average highs 22°C (70°F) and lows 3°C (37°F)
June to September (summer): Average highs 29°C (83°F) and lows 12°C (53°F)
October to November (fall): Average highs 18°C (64°F) and lows -1°C (30°F)
Getting There
By air, visitors can fly into one of three airports in Milan – Malpensa, Linate or Bergamo. Rental cars are available at the airports to take tourists to Como Lake. From Switzerland, visitors fly into the Lugano-Agno Airport.
It is also possible to reach Como Lake by crossing the border of Switzerland from Lugano and into Menaggio. The northern part of the lake can be accessed by the Splügen Pass; however, it is closed from the end of fall until the beginning of spring.
By rail, there are regular trains that go from Milan to Como Lake. It is important to note that there are two stations: Como Logo and Como San Giovanni. There are also trains that travel from Milan and Bergamo that bring passengers who have arrived by air.
