Favourite Cities and Hotels in Israel

With a population of 400,000, Tel Aviv may not have as many people as Jerusalem but the city is the economic heart of Israel. As a result, much of the country's wealth is vividly apparent in the city, from posh supper clubs and bars, to boutique hotels and upmarket retail outlets. Tel Aviv is also the cultural pulse point of Israel, with a vibrant arts and music scene full of museums, theaters and concert halls. Throw in UNESCO World Heritage architecture in the form of the White City and cosmopolitan Tel Aviv is a wonderful destination to explore.

The beachfront is where a lot of the action takes place in Tel Aviv, most notably at the height of the Mediterranean summer. The skyline of the city is particularly brilliant from the beach as the sun sets over the horizon, for which many gather to witness. A visit to Tel Aviv should include a stop in Jaffa, a beautiful ancient port city.

    Telling Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is Israel’s capital. But how many capital cities (and business centres) do you know where it always feel like it’s Saturday? In fact, it’s almost like Tel Aviv is suffering from a massive case of ADD and someone has hidden the Ritalin. And we mean that in the best possible way, because Tel Aviv is always buzzing, always throwing out something to do and always, always, always up for a party.

In terms of vibe, Tel Aviv is the polar opposite to the seriously significant – and significantly serious – Jerusalem. While there are fantastic religious sites to visit, there’s also the chance to chill out on the coastline, go off your (shopping) trolley in the Camel Market, Flea Market or the Nahalat Binyamin Pedestrian Mall, or spend time in trendy bars like Shesek, where the beer flows and the beautiful people play…

    Tel Aviv’s Top 10

    10. Almonit (Anonymous) Alley Sounds like a beat, but it’s not. That could be an awkward mistake…

    5. Azriely Lookout Best views of the city. Seriously.

    9. Tel Aviv Museum of Art The biggest collection of art in the city and definitely worth an afternoon’s browsing.

    4. Rabin Square Named for the prime minister assassinated here in 1995. Kind of spooky.

    8. Neve Tzedek Take a stroll around the old part of town and discover art galleries and cafés.

    3. Old Jaffa Be careful, this is where the Bible tells us Jonah boarded a ship and was swallowed by a big fish!

    7. Joshua Gardens Tel Aviv’s answer to Central Park, only without the celebs and camera crews.

    2. Nahum Goldman Museum of the Jewish Diaspora If you practise saying the name for too long you won’t have time to see the films!

    6. Rothschild Blvd Stroll around for free or pay a small fee to see where the 1948 Declaration of Independence was signed.

    1. Bauhaus Centre Check out all the artefacts and then join the city tours each Friday.

    Tel Aviv History

    • Independence Hall Museum – One of the most important museums and landmarks in Tel Aviv.
    • Neve Tzedek – One of the first Jewish settlements outside of old Jaffa.
    • White City – Come see great examples of Bauhaus architecture from the 1920s and ’30s.
    • Yitzhak Rabin Monument – A grim reminder of the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin in Tel Aviv.
    • Trumpeldor Cemetery – Contains the graves of some of Tel Aviv’s most interesting people.

    Tel Aviv Art & Culture

    • Tel Aviv Performing Arts Centre – Home of the Israeli Opera.
    • Frederic R. Mann Auditorium – This is Tel Aviv’s largest theatre and one of its most important.
    • Tel Aviv Cinemathèque – The centre of the film world in Tel Aviv.
    • Tel Aviv Museum of Art – Tel Aviv’s most celebrated collection of Israeli art.
    • Tel Aviv Raw Art – One of many new and unique galleries in Tel Aviv’s thriving art scene.

    Tel Aviv Shopping

    • Carmel Market – Dirt-cheap clothing and interesting Middle-Eastern food abound.
    • Nachalat Binyamin Pedestrian Mall – If you are looking for homemade items in Tel Aviv, this is the place to go.
    • Dizengoff Street – Home to more upscale shopping in Tel Aviv.
    • Hamedina Square – This is the place to go for the most exclusive boutiques in all of Tel Aviv.
    • Azrieli Centre – The tallest building in Tel Aviv and one of its most interesting shopping experiences.

    Gay & Lesbian Tel Aviv

    • Gay Pride Parade – Not only the largest in Tel Aviv, but the largest in all of Asia.
    • LGBT Community Centre – Provides all types of cultural services for the lesbian and gay community.
    • LBBT Film Festival – This festival features the works of gay and lesbian filmmakers.
    • The Promenade – Home to many gay bars and even a stretch of beach.
    • Gay Pride Month – The month of June is Gay Pride Month in Tel Aviv with many activities.

    Tel Aviv Events

The Tel Aviv Cinematheque starts rolling in May. Docaviv presents the most important documentary of the year from across the globe.

June comes out in style with the Tel Aviv International LGBT Film Festival. Celebrate gender diversity across the city.

July brings the White Night Festival, a celebration of Tel Aviv’s White City’s status as a World Heritage Site.

Twice a year, Tel Aviv gets all dolled up to celebrate the Tel Aviv Fashion Market. Top designers show off their latest trends.

Night Flea sounds like something you don’t want in your bed, but it’s actually a festival in Jaffa each August. Flea markets are open all night and there’s a range of shows, exhibitions and performances.

    When To Go

    • Tel Aviv’s subtropical climate is a crowd pleaser at any time of year.
    • Summer temperatures average 25°C (77°F), with a fairly high humidity. July and August are particularly busy tourist-wise.
    • Winter sees with it an average of 14°C (57°F), while rain is most common from November to April.

    Getting Around

    • Buses are a good option. Most routes run from 5am until midnight. A single trip is 5.20NIS, but for 12NIS you can buy a red pass that allows all-day travel.
    • Taxis charge by the meter in Tel Aviv and cost around 20-25NIS for trips within the city. They become more expensive after 9pm.
    • For around 30NIS you can rent a bike for a day and take advantage of the many dedicated bike tracks.
