Magelang is a city located in Central Java in Indonesia. This lush and green city is bordered on the west by the Progo River and on the east by the Elo River. Magelang has had a rich history, having served as the seat of government during British rule and as an economic centre under the Dutch. For history buffs, there are several museums showcasing these colonial times, including the Museum Pangeran Diponegoro, the National Military Academy and the Taruna Nusantara military school. If exploring the past isn’t enough for you, there are volcanoes and mountains nearby, as well as your fill of temples, shopping, dining, sports activities and parks.
Visitors interested in seeing temples shouldn’t miss the Buddhist Borobudur Temple or the Canggal Temple. Magelang’s largest mosque, Kauman, is also worth seeing and is conveniently located in the city’s Alun-alun, or town square. Those looking for a bit of shopping and a lot of eating should check out Jalan Pemuda in Magelang’s Chinatown. If you still find yourself with energy, consider playing a few rounds of golf at the Borobudur International Golf and Country Club or take a stroll through the natural beauty of Kyai Langgeng Park.
