Favourite Cities and Hotels in Indonesia

There are iconic landmarks and then there are iconic landmarks. Monuments so transcendent that they stir the emotions and inspire quiet, reverential awe. If the shortlist includes world wonders like the Great Wall of China, Taj Mahal, Pyramid Fields of Egypt, Stonehenge and Angkor Wat, surely Borobudur deserves to be in the mix.

In a word, the Mahayana Buddhist temple in Central Java is extraordinary. Consequently, Borobudur endures as the single most popular tourist attraction in Indonesia. Built in the 8th and 9th century, the foremost UNESCO World Heritage Site spans 2,500 m2 and remains active as both a shrine to Buddha and place of pilgrimage and worship. The small city of Magelang is the principal gateway to Borobudur. Some 43 km from the city of Yogyakarta and 75 km from Semarang, the capital of Central Java, Magelang is home to 120,000 people. As a platform to Borobudur and less of a specific target for tourists in Indonesia, Magelang is not flush with major points of interest. A few emerge as worthwhile however, for travellers in town for a day or two. The best include Mount Tidar and two Central Java cultural museums: Pangeran Diponegoro and Karmawibangga.

Nightlife

While Magelang is not big on the nightlife front, a few upscale resorts in the area do have bars. For nightclubs and bars in the city, nearby Yogyakarta is the best bet. Central Java capital Semarang is notably quiet in the nightlife department as well.

Magelang has a tropical equatorial climate, with abundant precipitation from December to April and temperatures between 24°C and 32°C for the year.

Magelang is a city located in Central Java in Indonesia. This lush and green city is bordered on the west by the Progo River and on the east by the Elo River. Magelang has had a rich history, having served as the seat of government during British rule and as an economic centre under the Dutch. For history buffs, there are several museums showcasing these colonial times, including the Museum Pangeran Diponegoro, the National Military Academy and the Taruna Nusantara military school. If exploring the past isn’t enough for you, there are volcanoes and mountains nearby, as well as your fill of temples, shopping, dining, sports activities and parks.

Visitors interested in seeing temples shouldn’t miss the Buddhist Borobudur Temple or the Canggal Temple. Magelang’s largest mosque, Kauman, is also worth seeing and is conveniently located in the city’s Alun-alun, or town square. Those looking for a bit of shopping and a lot of eating should check out Jalan Pemuda in Magelang’s Chinatown. If you still find yourself with energy, consider playing a few rounds of golf at the Borobudur International Golf and Country Club or take a stroll through the natural beauty of Kyai Langgeng Park.
